Foley Artist Research

Introuction

A foley artist is a person who creates and reproduces everyday common sound effects that are used in films, videos, video games or any other media in post-production to enhance the audio quality. These can be things such as squeaky doors and breaking glass.

They use a variety of objects to create different sounds, perhaps such as crushing dry pasta for a bone-cracking sound, tapping two coconut shells for horse shoes etc. A foley artists’ main goal is to create audio effects for films by using physical props.

They are responsible for very specific sounds, this means that foley artists specialise more in recreating finer details that require a high degree of precision rather than the typical explosion or car sounds – those are done by audio engineers.

I find it interesting how the sounds created by other objects can be used to imitate the sounds made my the actual object or item in question. A foley artist needs a very quiet environment to record specific sounds in order to pick up all of the audio.

They work with a wide variety of objects and props in their studios, it almost looks like scattered lost belongings.

We can take inspiration from foley artists when using our own audio files or sound effects from home to create a video game or file of our own.

Conclusion

So in summary, a foley artist is a profession where people study and record specific audio that can be used in films and movies. Some sound effects such as explosions or a car crashing are sounds specialised for audio engineers, whereas foley artists focus more on precise sounds or sound effects made for a certain movie in particular. I think this kind of occupation is interesting and can be fun as it allows the artists to be creative with their sound effects and how the sounds are made. This kind of job always keeps you thinking of different ways to achieve your goal.
